London. Elkin Mathews & Marrot. 1932. First edition. Green cloth-backed paper-covered boards, with an Art Deco inspired pattern in metallics and cobalt blue. Dust jacket with matching pattern and title labels pasted to spine and front board. 160 pages, printed on varied colour paper stock. Line drawings illustrated the text throughout. English. Very good; title rubbed on cloth spine, light wear to forecorners and head and base of spine; offsetting of flaps of dust jacket to endpapers; some mild wear and tear to fragile dust jacket, with some small losses, spine label worn with some loss to edges, the glue applied by the publishers to the front label has caused some staining and wrinkling to paper; a well-preserved copy with no inscriptions and with the scarce and fragile dust jacket.
A 'self-help' book for the Bright Young Thing. The book's full title is 'Chez James. The Wisdom and Foolishness of James: being a collection of papers concerning that Estimable and Lovable English Gentleman, gathered together by his Disapproving Family, and re-arranged by his Old Friends'. It provides a witty and tounge-in-cheek guide to modern manners and social etiquette for the young man about town, in this instance James Fitzroy Adolphus Montgomerie, 10th Bt.. Contents include 'James has well-defined Views on the Clubman', 'James warns his Nieces of the Pitfalls of Polite Conversation with Members of the Senior Service', 'James Invents a new Pastime for Wet Weather', and 'Inappropriate Menus'. Rose Henniker Heaton was the author of 'The Perfect Hostess' and of the prequel 'Dinner with James' published a year earlier.
