A rare antique Edo period Japanese Nagasaki school scroll painting (kakejiku) of a tiger. The tiger has a comical cat look as tigers are not native to Japan and the general population had never seen one until the circus arrived in the Meiji period. Prior to that the tiger was an imaginary creature to most Japanese, so artists used their imagination to paint what they thought a tiger might look like. It is signed by the artist in the lower right as shown. It has been laid down and mounted in a frame so it will need to be shipped as it is, we can not remove and roll up. It is worth restoring as a similar restored example recently sold with an asking price of €90,000 Euros ($96,129.90 USD)
Age - Edo Period, circa 1603 - 1867
Approximate Size - The actual artwork measures 43 + 1/2 inches tall by 18 + 1/2 inches across without the fabric border. The overall frame measures 61 inches tall by 31 inches across.
