This double-sided wooden sign … Read more This is a lovely and beautifully aged example of a traditional Japanese shop sign or kanban. This double-sided wooden sign is hand carved, painted and gilded, and depicts a comb and other hair dressing accessories with Japanese characters underneath. Attached at the top are two iron hooks for hanging. Late 19th Century. It would be a wonderful addition to most any décor.
During Japan’s Edo and Meiji eras, storeowners advertised their shop’s goods and trade with kanban. These handmade street signs were created by specialized artisans and usually crafted from wood, iron or fabric. They took on very visual forms, which were beautiful and served to help the illiterate find stores and services.
Measurements: 13” W x 1” D x 25.5” H (including 1.5” tall hooks)
Condition: In good antique condition with signs of wear commensurate with age and use, including some loss to gilding, wood loss at corners, cracking and possible worm holes on side edges, and bending of one of the iron hooks.
