A striking and rare set of four tønnestav dining chairs by kjell richardsen, designed in 1960 and manufactured by tynes møbelfabrikk in norway. These chairs had a brief yet notable production run due to a legal dispute with designer hans brattrud. A true piece of scandinavian design history, they showcase a sculptural aesthetic combined with functional comfort. Few pieces were ever produced, making this set a remarkable addition to any design collection or interior.
design
the tønnestav chair is defined by its curved teak veneered plywood slats, precisely formed to create both structure and flexibility. These slats, arranged in a rhythmic vertical pattern, shape the backrest and seat, providing ergonomic support. The sculpted seat is mounted on a minimalist chromed metal base, giving the chair a floating appearance while ensuring stability. The craftsmanship emphasizes both aesthetics and functionality, with a gently contoured silhouette that adapts to the body. A small “made in norway” stamp is located beneath the seat, marking its provenance. Despite its brief production period, the tønnestav chair remains a fascinating object within scandinavian modernism. Its resemblance to hans brattrud’s scandia chair led to a court ruling that halted production, making surviving examples extremely scarce. A perfect addition to a curated interior, these chairs bridge historical significance with timeless design.
condition
this particular set is in very good original condition, with only minor signs of wear consistent with age. The teak veneer retains its rich tone, and the chrome bases remain sturdy and well-preserved. A rare opportunity to own an exceptional piece of scandinavian design history. designer records,
or other literature sources and take full responsibility for any authenticity issues arising
