Table lamp, signed Suberville, Art Nouveau, bent glass and acid etching, 19th century. XX – France
This splendid table lamp, made in France during the first half of the 20th century and signed “Suberville”, stands out for its delicate work in multi-layered or folded and etched glass. The work of folded glass is an artisanal process that enhances its beauty and originality, in this case it can be seen in the pink stripes and the floral border, which double its volume. The colorless base appears with a matte or frosted finish as a result of the acid work. The elegant and symmetrical lines are characteristics of the organic aesthetics of Art Nouveau, as is its decorative border of floral motifs.
The lampshade, decorated with exquisite bead pendants in transparent, amber and red colors, forms a zigzag pattern inspired by natural motifs. The glass drops that crown this design subtly reflect light, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The metal structure that frames the piece, with the “Suberville” and “Collection privée” signature engraved, adds a sober and sophisticated contrast, underlining its timeless elegance. Two light points under the screen or lampshade and another two on the foot.
Acid glass is an etching technique that uses an acid solution to create textures and patterns on the surface of the glass. This artisanal process, known for its delicacy and precision, allows us to obtain nuanced and translucent effects that give the piece an ethereal atmosphere. The acid technique was widely used in the design of Art Nouveau objects, as it highlights the fine details of natural and organic motifs, softening the luminosity of the glass and creating a soft, diffuse light that enhances the beauty of the object. Made with high quality materials, this lamp is an example of the art and craftsmanship of the early 20th century.
The Suberville brand is usually associated with the Vianne brand, a prestigious glass factory in France, known for producing high-quality lampshades, lampshades and lighting elements from the 19th century to the end of the 20th century. Their work was used in Art Nouveau and early Art Deco style lamps, and it was common for them to make pieces for other brands or designers, suggesting that Suberville may have been an associate manufacturer, designer, or collaborating trademark in the production of exclusive lamps.
