A painting that refers to the Madonna Eleusa, also known as "Mother of God of Tenderness", which shows an undeniable feeling of affection and tenderness between mother and child. There are several variations and the image presented here shows: Mary holding Jesus in her arms with their cheeks touching. Another version to take into consideration is the Glicofilusa icon, very similar to the Eleusa, except that in this case the baby Jesus, always with his cheeks close together, will touch the Madonna's chin with one hand.
The meaning these images want to convey is the intimate relationship between the two figures and the humanity of the Son. Furthermore, Mary's often painful gaze is always highlighted, a symbol of the woman's expectation of Christ's suffering.
The colors of the entire canvas refer to some typical symbols of the iconographic tradition of the Madonna: the green dress which recalls the earth, purity and fertility, the red cloak symbolizing love and the golden edges of the cloak symbolizing royalty. The stars present on the Virgin's mantle symbolize virginity before, during and after childbirth. The parchment, however, held by baby Jesus is nothing other than the Word of God.
The painting measures 52x71 cm, has a contemporary frame measuring 65x88 cm. It does not have the author's signature and the country of origin is uncertain, we are certainly talking about Eastern Europe. A superficial cleaning was carried out.
