Trompe l’oeil is a technique (loosely meaning “deceive the eye”) where the artist can render a three-dimensional image on a flat surface. In addition to the illusion of the bark, the talented artisan surrounded the oval plaque with two rings of thin branches. The center of the plaque depicts a wonderful Black Forest hunting trophy in relief. Two felled birds are suspended from a partial branch by a crinkled ribbon bow, with various foliage and vines with berries meandering all around the game. The birds are well carved, with detailed plumage, accentuated by the rich brown patina of the wood. Although the theme of the Black Forest plaque is well suited for a hunting lodge, it would also make a welcome addition to a study, game room, or hallway. See less
