Pair of 18th Century Tall Burmese Mandalay Standing Buddha's – Polychrome Gold Gilded Teak with Glass Inlay
Description:
A rare and exquisite pair of Mandalay Period (18th century) Burmese Standing Buddhas, masterfully hand-carved from teakwood, adorned with gold gilding and intricate glass inlays. Representing Yin (female) and Yang (male) energy, these Buddhas stand gracefully in the healing mudra on an open lotus flower, each delicately holding a Myrobalan fruit (Terminalia chebula)—a symbol of enlightenment and medicinal healing, gifted by the God Indra.
Both Buddhas wear flowing robes (uttarasanga) with elaborately carved folds, beautifully decorated with glass aqua and mirror insets and intricate lacquerwork. Their serene expressions, elongated earlobes, and finely detailed features reflect the artistry of Mandalay-style Buddhist sculptures, known for their realism and refined craftsmanship.
Each Buddha stands on a black and red carved lacquered lotus pedestal/ plinth with inlaid brilliants/mirror glass—the male Buddha is slightly taller, mounted on a classic column pedestal base, while the female Buddha is mounted on a square red and black block pedestal /plinth base.
