Art Deco Pompadour Ring, Platinum, Natural Sapphire and Diamonds
This Pompadour ring, dating from the 1930s and crafted in platinum, is an iconic Art Deco design. Made by a French jeweler of the era, it bears the dog’s head hallmark, ensuring the authenticity and high quality of its platinum craftsmanship.
At its center, the ring features a natural blue sapphire, oval-cut, weighing approximately 2.5 carats. Its deep brilliance is enhanced by a halo of 16 old-cut diamonds, totaling approximately 1.20 carats.
The meticulous setting and arrangement of the diamonds around the sapphire create a radiant halo effect, a signature of high jewelry pieces from this period. This enhances the sapphire’s rich blue hue and gives the ring an exceptional sparkle.
The back of the setting is also finely crafted, showcasing the expertise of French jewelers of the time. This delicate work is not just aesthetic—it optimizes light reflection, further enhancing the ring’s brilliance.
The Legacy of the Pompadour Ring
The Pompadour ring has become a jewelry classic, gaining worldwide fame thanks to Lady Diana. In 1981, Prince Charles proposed with a stunning Pompadour-inspired engagement ring, featuring a 12-carat sapphire surrounded by 14 diamonds. Unlike other royal engagement rings, Diana personally selected this design from Garrard’s collection, rather than having a custom piece made.
After her passing, the ring was passed down to her son, Prince William, who later proposed to Kate Middleton with it in 2010. Today, this legendary ring remains one of the most famous jewelry pieces in the world, continuing to inspire contemporary designers.
