Hopper Drawing Edward Hopper First Edition Hardcover In Dust jacket By Carter E. Foster with contributions by DANIEL S.PALMER,NICHOLAS ROBBINS, KIMIA SHAHI, MARK W. TURNER
EDWARD HOPPER (1882-1967) is recognized as one of the greatest American artists of the twentieth century. The influence of his distinctive style extends beyond painting into popular culture, photography, and film. This important publication is the first comprehensive exploration of Hopper's drawings and working methods, which are the foundation of the artist's iconic works such as Early Sunday Morning (1930) and Nighthawks (1942).
In 1967 Hopper's widow, Josephine
Nivison Hopper, bequeathed her husband's artistic estate to the Whitney Museum of American Art, including a fascinating collection of more than 2,500 drawings spanning his lifetime. These works have never before been the subject of in-depth study, and many are reproduced here for the first time. Hopper kept his drawings for personal reference as he revisited various themes throughout his career.
Carter E. Foster examines how Hopper used drawing to develop his paintings, showing that the artist's work can only be fully understood through the evolution that occurred from one medium to the other.
Hopper's drawings recorded his direct observations of the world as well as his imaginative transformations, as he shaped subject and content through this process.
The steps toward this refinement are unique to Hopper and reveal how his own memory and subjectivity infused his work to create imagery with poetic, universal appeal.
