It is titled 'Farmyard Friends' and … Read more A fine quality oil on canvas by listed British artist Edwin Frederick Holt (1830-1912). It is titled 'Farmyard Friends' and depicts two horses in a farm with ducks and chickens. Holt was a prolific painter of farm scenes, skilled in both composition and light effects. It is signed bottom center and dated 1903, and presented in a period giltwood gallery frame. The work has a Christie's auction provenance, see photo, Christie's, 02 July 2013, Lot 813.

Born in 1830, Holt grew up in Hampstead and spent most of his life in Dunstable. He began his artistic career by studying at the Royal Academy of Art where he won a silver medal for his work at the age of 24. He won recognition as many of his paintings were entered into exhibitions. Seven paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy, twelve works at the British Institution and forty at the Royal Society of Arts.
