An original nautical oil on canvas by listed French artist Jean Kevorkian (1933 - ). It is a very beautiful scene depicting boats in the historic harbor of St Malo, where the painter often visited. Titled 'Sailboats in St. Malo', the work is dated 1981, and is signed lower left and titled verso. Provenance, private French Collection. His work is well collected in the United States and Europe. The artist, age 92 currently has auction / listed sales prices upwards of $30,000 which will likely only increase with the passage of time. Sight: 22" L x 18" H.
Kevorkian was born in Paris in 1933 and is one of France's more successful contemporary painters. He is self taught and began painting at an early age. His last name suggests Armenian roots, but his life and education have been entirely French. His particular skill in conveying the atmosphere of the changing seasons distinguishes his work: The banks of The Ile de France, the banks of the Seine and Oise in autumn and winter are favorite themes.
Art has long been regarded as a strong and safe investment. Ellen Kelleher, a personal finance reporter for The Financial Times wrote an article recommending art particularly in the $500 - $50,000 range as a sound long term investment with an impressive current average annual yield of 9.7%. See 'Hang Your Investments on the Wall' in the Financial Times published in October, 2010.
