Description:
This poetic, humorous and design-centric biographical book by one of the publishing world’s flamboyant artists features images from Rolf Fehlbaum's life, twentieth-century design, his collaborators, and projects.
Tibor Kalman's pictorial essay recounts the story of chair design from the invention of the chair to the success story of Vitra., "In the beginning people spent their days walking upright and their nights lying down. Eventually someone invented sitting. And chairs. Chairs evolved ... and multiplied. A million years (give or take) pass. A boy named Rolf is born into a family in Basel that builds shops. Their neighbors make cheese and chocolate."
Fehlbaum's parents were the first business people to produce and distribute (outside the USA) the innovative chairs designed by Charles and Ray Eames in the 1950s.
Fehlbaum has also researched the history of chairs, collected chairs from all around the world and is deeply and creatively focused on chairs, the elements of their design and manufacture, and their place in the discipline of interior design.
