Perseus or the Birth of Pegasus: large group in patinated regulation representing Perseus and the winged horse Pegasus
Large sculpture signed E Picault and bearing the words 'Salon des Beaux-Arts' and a stamp 'French manufacturing, made in France'
Perseus or the Birth of Pegasus is a famous episode from Greek mythology:
Danae, locked up by her father in a brazen tower because he fears an oracle (he actually predicted that he would be killed by his grandson!) is seduced by Zeus who is transformed into a rain of gold
from this union Perseus is born. To protect him, Perseus is taken in by fishermen and grows up.
Having become an adult, our hero is entrusted with the mission of killing Medusa, a Gorgon who terrorizes men and who has the power to petrify any mortal who looks into her eyes.
Perseus kills the gorgon, and Pegasus is born from Medusa's severed neck
Pegasus will be entrusted to Perseus' son, Bellerophon, with whom he will accomplish numerous exploits and he would also have had the merit of having created a certain number of springs with a single blow of his hooves.
