A striking Scandinavian rya rug from the 1960s–1970s, hand-knotted in Sweden and distinguished by its richly textured high pile and vibrant tonal composition.
Executed in an expressive palette of deep blue and luminous turquoise, the rug presents an organic, almost floral abstraction that subtly shifts with the light and the direction of the pile. The long wool fibers create a dynamic, sculptural surface with exceptional depth, giving the piece both a strong visual presence and a luxurious tactile quality.
With its generous proportions of 185 x 133 cm (72.8 x 52.4 in), the rug functions effortlessly as a focal point within a space. The substantial pile enhances its immersive character and reinforces its distinctly three-dimensional expression.
Like many Scandinavian rya rugs of this period, it should not be regarded merely as a floor covering. It is equally compelling as a wall-mounted textile, where its rich coloration and painterly composition can be appreciated as a large-scale work of textile art. At the same time, the dense wool construction contributes to improved acoustics, adding both visual warmth and functional value to an interior.
Handcrafted in wool and preserved in very good vintage condition, with only light wear consistent with age and use, this piece represents a refined and highly decorative example of mid-century Scandinavian textile design.
