Wim (Willem) Strijbosch (Amsterdam 1928-1968) earned his living by painting wooden furniture. He studied Graphic Design at the Instituut voor Kunstnijverheidsonderwijs in Amsterdam until 1947, receiving instruction from notable figures like painter Mark Kolthoff and designer Mart Stam.
In 1951, Strijbosch joined Creatie, where he formed many friendships. As an introvert, he sought self-reflection, infusing his works with poetic expression. His creations from 1949-1953 often depict a cosmic environment, influenced by Paul Klee. Although Strijbosch primarily focused on geometric-abstract compositions, he painted them freehand.
Post-1953, his geometric designs evolved into a freer, more expressive style characterized by bold colors, relaxed brushstrokes, and occasional motifs such as bird figures. from 1954 to 1957, Strijbosch worked in the advertising department of a large retail chain and designed various museum posters and catalogs until around 1965, gaining considerable recognition for his work.
Collaborating with Crouwel and Keus, he was involved in theater productions as a stage and set designer and taught at the Koninklijke Academie in Den Bosch and the Instituut voor Kunstnijverheidsonderwijs in Amsterdam. As an executive of Liga Nieuw Beelden, Strijbosch advocated for the integration of art and architecture, making significant contributions to the Dutch artistic climate.
Wim Strijbosch passed away from cancer at the young age of forty in 1968. His role as chairman of Liga Nieuw Beelden and his involvement in various graphic arts organizations allowed him to have a substantial influence on the art scene. Strijbosch dedicated his life to the arts.
