Description of the item:
Stunning painting, oil on cardboard, depicting the Grand Canal in Venice. On the right, you can see St. Mark's Square with its famous bell tower, while on the left is the Church of La Salute. Signed by the artist in the lower right corner and framed in carved and gilded wood. The location depicted, Venice, is written on the back, along with the date, which is unfortunately difficult to read. Created by the painter Paul Lucien Maze, an important French artist. The work can be dated to around 1950. Beautiful patina, especially on the back. Created in the Post-Impressionist style.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
Internet research shows that Paul Lucien Maze has achieved numerous respectable auction results, with the four highest results ranging from $18,394 to $31,080 plus auction fees of 25-30%. Furthermore, the signature on the painting is identical to the one registered on Art Price and also visible on some paintings that have been auctioned. The colors used and the way the boats and buildings are painted are also very similar to those in our painting, and we have found the same slight bluish-greenish tone present throughout the painting in more than one of the artist's seascape paintings. Finally, we found many paintings by this artist on Invaluable, where only the starting estimates are shown, but not the final results, which are certainly much higher on average. In any case, the estimates range from a minimum of €200 to €2,000, but for paintings that are much smaller than ours and mostly watercolors.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
Paul Lucien Maze (1887–1979) was an Anglo-French painter. He is often referred to as "the last of the Post-Impressionists" and was one of the great artists of his generation. His works included oils, watercolors, and pastels, and his subjects were mainly seascapes, busy cities, and the English countryside. He is particularly known for his typically English themes: regattas, sporting events, and ceremonial celebrations, such as the races at Goodwood, Henley Regatta, Trooping the Color, and yachting at Cowes. During World War I, Maze met Winston Churchill in the trenches, and their shared love of painting led to a lifelong friendship. Maze became Churchill's artistic mentor, encouraging him to develop his drawing and painting techniques. This piece has an attribution mark,
