Very large portrait of Princess Elisabeth of Prussia with her two sons Louis (future Grand Duke of Hesse) and Henri … Read more Very large portrait of Princess Elisabeth of Prussia with her two sons Louis (future Grand Duke of Hesse) and Henri (Prince of Hesse and the Rhine, general of cavalry): she is represented seated in her interior, showing her hand to her younger a painting; his eldest son remains slightly behind, looking thoughtful.

This painting is signed lower left Hermelein.

Carl Johann Nepomuk Hermelein painter born in Mainz in 1807 and died in Vienna in 1884.
Studying in Paris with Paul Delaroche and at the Vienna School of Fine Arts, his career mainly took place between France, Prussia and Austria.
After his meeting with the Austrian chancellor Prince Metternich in 1837, he participated for several years in the exhibition of the Darmstadt Art Association (years 1837-1838)
He mainly painted pictures for altars but also portraits or historical scenes.
