Handmade in wool and originating circa 1920-1930, this 2x4 antique rug is a rare and exciting new curation in Rug & Kilim’s collection of American hooked rugs.
On the Design:
This collectible piece features a play of abstract patterns and implied geometry, with a polychromatic colorway particularly favoring hues of beige-brown, red, blue, and black making its whimsical take on a field and border structure. Keen eyes will admire the shaggy texture and lively persona of this style that defines the rarity and charm of this piece—often called a rag rug, as admirers of the craft will know in this and the few similar provenances of folk art and tribal rugs. This is one of the most remarkable rugs we’ve curated from this style, with an equally gorgeous and unique design for this craft, much like Moroccan Bouchourite rugs in its textural, playful beauty and boho chic charm. The look is eclectic and vibrant, like few of its period—a collectible rug, yet comfortable and teeming with folksy delight this lineage of American is known for in our craft today.
Condition:
This antique hooked rug further enjoys an overall good condition for its age and origin, with some mild wear consistent with its age and provenance.
