While many Pao Tou rugs were known to favor Indigo and similar tones, this is clearly a piece that draws influence from those designs with its own warm colors—a field of cream, with several borders in beige-brown and a particularly bright, delicious tangerine red. Its field enjoys intricate clouds and medallions surrounded by animals—namely bat motifs, a symbol of good fortune in Chinese mythology, and an extremely rare and collectible design element seldom seen in this period today.
