Woodie Long (1942-2009) was an American folk artist known for his vibrant and joyful paintings. Born in Plant City, Florida, he grew up working in the fields as a sharecropper's son. Long's art reflects the simple pleasures of life, often depicting scenes from his childhood like children playing, flying kites, and riding in trucks.
His work is characterized by bold colors, spontaneous brushstrokes, and a childlike sense of wonder. Although he had no formal training, Long's paintings are now found in major museums and private collections around the world.
He said he named this piece after one of the women from the sharecropper community of his childhood. This work was purchased directly from the artist at his home studio in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida in 1995 and has been in the same home ever since.
