Little has been written about him, and those that knew him have in their turn passed from this earth. His works have been dispersed and largely forgotten, some destroyed and others lost. The portraits and hunting scenes he produced over the course of several decades depict some of the most prominent individuals and famous horses of the early 20th century, and landscapes now irreversibly altered. Taken as a whole, they represent an invaluable document of a time and a social milieu that is rapidly disappearing from living memory. As an artist, Newton can hold his own among the most competent sporting painters not only of his day but, it may be ventured, of all time. It is the author's purpose to present and docu ment the paintings he has largely been instrumental in uncovering, to collect and collate whatever documentary evidence there exists of the artist's life and work, and to inspire others to join him in his quest to restore Richard Newton, Jt., to his rightful place among his peers.
