The perspective from an opposite bank of the Targus River showcases a majestic blend of architectural styles developed over centuries – the Roman-era bridge, the Renaissance towers, the townhouses set into the hillside. The painting captures the formidable simplicity of fortress's robust structure, characterized by its massive walls and four corner towers, a symbol of military and royal power.

About the Artist: Jules Eugene Pagès (1867-1946) was born in San Francisco. At age 21, he went to Paris in 1888 to study at the Académie Julian, a major art training center and alternative to the official Ecole des Beaux Arts popular with foreign art students and many leading modern artists. After his art studies, Jules Pagès returned to San Francisco to work as an illustrator before returning to Paris in 1902. He made Paris his home base for 40 years, taught classes at the Académie Julian, and served as its director, gaining international recognition for his unusual talent. He had exhibited at the Paris Salon, 1895 with honorable mention, and won Gold Medals there in 1899 and 1905. He also returned to California frequently and exhibited at the Steckel Gallery in Los Angeles in 1909; at the Panama Pacific International Exposition in 1915; at the Bohemian Club, 1924 solo exhibition; the California Palace of Legion of Honor, 1946 memorial exhibition.
