About the artwork: This intricately hand-carved wood sculpture depicts Shouxing, who represents Longevity. He is one of three stellar gods in Chinese mythology alongside Prosperity and Good Fortune, known collectively as Fulushou. He is also called Nanji Laoren or “Old Man of the South Pole”, a bearded vital old man with an enormously high bald head. He is draped in embroidered silk robes and holds a crooked staff and a branch of peaches, a symbol of immortality. On one side of his feet, a child smiles with a hand full of peaches and on the other side perches a stork, another symbol of longevity.
This highly polished wood sculpture is lightly gilded in gold and weighs a solid 42 pounds.
