With our absolute highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in offering this remarkable antique sideboard. We believe this example to be among the finest sideboards available anywhere presently and to be the perfect design solution for anyone with a traditional interior. There are varying examples commonly found in antique shops or offered for sale online and typically we find most antique sideboards to be below the standards of most discerning antique collectors. Three points of consideration we advise our clients to keep in mind when purchasing antique furniture are quality, function, and scarcity. Generally, most sideboards have one or two of these aspects working in their favor but seldomly do all three considerations align in the form of the perfect antique design solution. With respect to our current offering this sideboard has every attribute a serious collector may hope to find.
The entire case of the sideboard is comprised of a premium grade of mahogany which features bold and illustrious grain along with white pine secondaries utilized for the drawer interiors and singular backboard. Along with centuries of oxidation the backboard features through tenon case joinery which has ensured that the sideboard has remained sturdy and secure throughout time. This case construction in conjunction with the hand-cut dovetail joinery utilized in building each drawer has guaranteed that the sideboard remains as dependable as when it was first made. In contrast to the brilliance of the figured mahogany grain, satinwood bands were inlaid into the top and each drawer face to create a wonderous effect. Subtle bands of ebony string inlay were added to the satinwood to further enhance the overall aesthetic quality which the contrast between darker and lighter tones create. The sideboard has an overall bowfront curvature form that is not only incredibly difficult to achieve but also elevates the piece above most other comparable examples. The entire case is elevated on six tapered legs which end on spade feet with the frontward facing feet having elliptical string inlay accents. Two compartmented center drawers are intended to house a collection of silver or serviceware.
The case features two remarkable bottle drawers which alone are an incredibly rare feature but to further propel the sophistication of this sideboard each bottle drawer retains the original drainage holes embedded in the drawer bottoms. Beneath each bottle drawer is a swinging door which may have served to house a water basin so that water from the bottle drawers may drip below and be disposed of. Every drawer and door are all fitted with exceptional brass pulls which feature raised Grecian urn motifs in high relief. There is evidence that another type of hardware was once fitted to the sideboard along with what we presume may have been a brass gallery upon the top which for practicality reasons was removed and the mounting holes filled by an expert restorer. A singular band of satinwood and ebony inlay spans the lowest section of the case just where the case meets the tapered legs. The sideboard measures 63 3/4" wide x 30 1/2" deep x 36 1/4" tall.
