This eye-catching and unusual vintage art glass lamp makes a strong statement in a subtle and elegant way, due to both its dark color and the exotic gold hand-painted mythological image on its face. The black glass has a handsome matte finish on which is painted an abstract gold webbing. At the center of this webbing is a rendering of Greek mythic figures, depicting a female Bacchant (follower of Bacchus and Dionysus) riding a young Centaur (or Satyr); she holds him by his hair and his hands are tied behind his back. She carries in her left hand a thyrsus (staff made of giant fennel topped with a pinecone, a symbol of fertility and hedonism associated with Dionysus). This is clearly applied by a fine artist, who unfortunately appears to have not signed his or her name to it. The matte finish extends up to the neck, where it transitions to transparent black.
This high-quality crystal base was discovered still packed in its original excelsior. It was made in West Germany by fine artisans during the reconstruction period after World War II, in the late 1940's in to the 1950's. It has its tag still on it (see picture) describing it as hand-painted, made in U.S. zone, Germany, and it is most likely "STAR CRYSTAL", as shown on tags found on other pieces packed with it.
We have completed the lamp with the needed parts and work necessary. It is mounted on a round, black, wood base. We show it with a plain lampshade (not included) to give a feel for dimensionality.

There is a dime-sized chip off the surface of the glass base, at the very bottom, 90 degrees off to the right side. This is clearly shown in one of the pictures. When the lamp is facing forward, it is not seen easily.
