“The Bow manufactory labeled itself ‘New Canton’, as so much of the inspiration for its output came from China. The factory excelled in the production of blue and white useful wares aimed at the emerging middle class market, the main reason for its continued success over several decades.”
“In the 18th century, sauce boats were a common serving vessel used for sauces, gravies, and other liquid accompaniments for food. They were typically made of porcelain or silver, and were often elaborately decorated with intricate designs and motifs. Sauce boats were an important part of the formal dining experience in the 18th century. They were usually placed on the table alongside other serving dishes, such as tureens and platters. When a dish required sauce or gravy, the sauce boat would be filled and passed around the table by the serving staff, who would offer it to each guest to pour over their food. Sauce boats came in a variety of shapes and sizes, depending on the type of sauce or gravy they were intended to hold. For example, some were longer and narrower for serving gravy, while others were wider and shallower for serving thin sauces. In addition to their functional use, sauce boats were also considered a status symbol in the 18th century. The most elaborate and ornate examples were often displayed on sideboards or in cabinets as a demonstration of the owner's wealth and sophistication.”
