bronze figure standing on a two-tier base made of black and gray veined marble. We see a naked swordsman in action. With his gaze forward and his sword pointing downwards, his weight rests on his right leg, the supporting leg. His left leg is slightly bent and is ready to take the next step.
the young man's well-trained upper body is in a tense yet balanced pose. He holds the sword in his right hand and keeps his balance with his left arm.
if he keeps his gaze focused straight ahead, he is completely focused on his opponent.

the bronze figure has a dark patina and the sword is polished golden.
the signature "rudolf marcuse" can be found on the oval plinth, as well as the foundry marking "akt ges gladenbek berlin".

rudolf marcuse (1878-1940) was a german sculptor who worked in berlin until 1936 and then moved to great britain because of his jewish descent.
marcuse was known for his nude figures, such as the discus thrower, the swordsman or the amazon, but also for large-format sculptures such as the monument to moses mendelssohn in the front garden of the jewish boys' school in berlin or the portrait of zoo director carl hagenbeck with the trieste lion in hamburg-stellingen from 1926.
