Genuine and antique Yamamoto Koichi (1833-1903, also known as Koitsu) Japanese scroll painting (kakemono) of Waves and Sunrise. In Japanese art, the constant motion of waves represents the Buddhist concept of change and impermanence, whereas a bright red rising sun is often used to represent a new beginning. The details of the wave and ocean spray on this painting are striking. Below the wave you can also see the silhouette of a turtle swimming. Painted on silk with ink and mineral pigments; signed (in cursive Kanji) and sealed by the artist in ink. The scroll comes with a Paulownia wood storage box, with the artist’s name.
ARTIST: Yamamoto Koichi (1833-1903, also known as Koitsu) was a Japanese painter of the Edo Rinpa school. He was born in Edo and learned his art from his father, Yamamoto Sodo, who in turn was a disciple of Sakai Hoitsu, the founder of the Edo Rinpa school. Koichi enjoyed considerable success during his time: his artworks were exhibited extensively across Japan, as well as at the Paris Exhibition of Japanese Art in 1883. Today Koichi’s work can be found in museum collections around the world, including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
