Painter:
thomas riss stams 1871 - innsbruck 1959 the life of the farmer's boy from stams was marked by success as well as crises of an economic and personal-human nature. With great material deprivation, the poor upper inntaler initially completed training as a craft painter in innsbruck at the state trade school in order to become a skilled painter afterwards, he decided to attend the art academy in munich also studied with franz von defregger, among others. In 1898 the young artist came to meran/burggrafenamt to cure a lung disease, where he stayed for 29 years. 1904 travels to the usa to the world's fair in st. Louis, where he wins the gold medal. 1907 marriage to friederike kuhn in the karlskirche in vienna, 1908 daughter walfrieda (friedele) was born. 1914 called up in the first world war - enlisted as a rifleman with the merano people and became an esteemed war painter. Then in 1927, in view of the territorial changes brought about by the first world war, he moved back to north tyrol where he bought a house in innsbruck-mühlau. In 1959, riss died of pneumonia at the age of 87. He was awarded numerous recognitions for his artistic work: the title of “professor”, the medal of honor of the state of tyrol, the austrian cross of merit for art and science, and honorary citizenship of stams. As an image creator, riss represented a decidedly out-of-date phenomenon in view of the revolutionary developments in 20th century art. Stylistically, despite occasional excursions into impressionism, he remained true to a naturalistic style of representation throughout his life. The artist's work is thematically broad, but the confident portraits that the master created are particularly noteworthy. In addition to these, there are landscape images, themes of rural people in everyday life, religious and mythological motifs.
