The knight wears full armor, but the heavy concreteness of the metal seems to vanish thanks to the diaphanous figure of the Queen, the indefinite peace of the landscape, and the discreet passion of the scene, as in the most traditional and successful representations of Mars and Venus. In the background, on a hill, stands a castle, the only element of temporality.
The quality of the painting is sublime, and the state of conservation is excellent.
The painting dates back to the artist's stay in Monaco, where in 1904 he purchased the most beautiful art nouveau villa in the Principality, which took his name - still known as Villa Sauber, since 1972 home to the Musée National de Monaco.
