In the Italy of the first half of the twentieth century there is a place that becomes the cradle of fruitful artists, painters, graphic designers, sculptors, architects and designers, who will make the history of Italian art of the twentieth century. We are talking about the city of Pistoia, twenty kilometers from the majestic and invasive Florence, the city that in the 1960s will become the headquarters of Poltronova, which will become an icon of modern design. But before Poltronova, Pistoia is the city of Giovanni Michelucci, Marino Marini, Agenore Fabbri, Sigfrido Bartolini, Mario Nigro and the large group of avant-gardists and twentieth-century Pistoia painters, an extraordinary unicum in the contemporary artistic panorama. The lesser known, but no less capable, Mario Toccangini is also part of this group. Born and raised in this avant-garde environment, inspired by the vision of a popular world, he focuses on portraying women, interpreted according to a taste still oriented towards abstract expressionism. This "Portrait of a Girl", performed in mixed media, confirms this, just as it confirms his great abilities.
The painting has its original frame and was framed, as confirmed by the label attached to the back, at the Morandi gallery in Pistoia, a lively meeting place for Pistoia artists at that time. Always behind is the authentic manuscript by the painter.
