Ruth Pastine (born 1964) is an American artist known for her mesmerizing abstract minimalist paintings that explore color, light, and space. Her work has ties to the Southern California Light and Space movement but stands apart with its focus on consciousness and her use of traditional tools like brushes, paint, and pastels instead of industrial materials. She’s often compared to artists like Monet and Malevich for her exploration of light, and to Abstract Expressionists like Barnett Newman and Mark Rothko for her deep dive into the nuances of color.

Pastine’s paintings are built layer by layer with countless brushstrokes, creating seamless gradients of color that seem to glow, pulse, or even float. Art critic Peter Frank described her work as “purely optical painting,” thanks to its subtle and intricate color transitions.

Her art has been exhibited in major institutions like the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD), and the Lancaster Museum of Art and History (MOAH).

She is a highly collected artist.
