This rare and exquisite 1920s oil jardiniere pot by Hillside Pottery Co. is a stunning example of California’s Spanish Revival craftsmanship. The piece features 3” x 3” decorative tiles by the renowned D&M Tile Company, celebrated for their bold and colorful designs that defined the era. These tiles are beautifully framed by intricate 1” x 1” mosaic borders at the top and bottom, showcasing meticulous attention to detail and artistry.
Hillside Potteries originated in the 1920s and 1930s as a small roadside stand located on an isolated stretch of highway at 11720 Ventura Blvd in the San Fernando Valley. The company crafted high-quality decorative garden ware molded from cement, designed to complement the Craftsman and Spanish styles of the era. Their vessels ranged from large oil jars to small jardinieres, all hand-formed using unique cement mixtures. Each piece was adorned with decorative bands crafted from tiny mosaic tiles or broken tile shards, inlaid flush with the vessel’s surface. Many designs drew inspiration from Spanish and Italian influences.
Hillside Pottery is incredibly rare, with much of its history, including details about the company and its workers, remaining a mystery. Even more scarce are pieces in pristine condition, particularly the jardiniere pots with handles and mosaic tile bands, which are the most desirable among collectors. The pinnacle of rarity is represented by pots featuring D&M Spanish tiles, some of the most sought-after early California tiles. This makes this particular Hillside jardiniere an extraordinary find. Today, Hillside pottery stands as one of the rarest and most collectible forms of historical pottery on the market.
