Item description:
Delightful, large oil painting on canvas depicting the famous Casina delle Civette (Owl House) at Villa Torlonia in Rome, Italy. The painting is very large and well executed, dating from around 1970 and featuring a beautiful hand-carved wooden frame embellished with hand-engraved floral decorations on the wood and silver leaf decorations. The painting is signed by the artist with a barely legible signature, which appears to be "M. Bono," but we are not sure, as we have not found anything online with this name. The Casina delle Civette was built in 1840 by architect Giuseppe Jappelli on commission from Prince Alessandro Torlonia, and was the residence of Giovanni Torlonia Jr. until 1938. It was given this nickname because in the early decades of the 20th century, Duilio Cambellotti created several decorations depicting owls in different parts of the villa, for example in the windows of the house or on the various capitals of the columns, which have bas-relief decorations, also depicting owls, and above all the large ceramic bas-relief plaque just above the arch of the central door, decorated with two large owls, a nest, and small owls in bas-relief. For this reason, the villa took the name "Casina delle Civette" (Little House of Owls). This historic building, which is very important and famous in the Italian capital, features elements in wood, tuff, and stone. A few years ago, it became a museum open to the public.
