Magnificent coffee table or side table made by Maison Jansen around the 1970s, decorated with a map that draws powerful attention. This coffee table has a simple structure made of wood, with straight lines and a quadrangular profile. The glass top has an aged gold brass frame that protects it and joins it to the structure. It is a coffee table that follows the campaign style, so characteristic of colonial British art and adopted on many occasions by the Maison Jansen house.
The map is titled “A new and correct map of the world down BC. Cording to the newest discoveries and forming the most exact observations, by Herman Moll geographer.” This is a map made by Herman Moll in the 18th century, belonging to a collection of around thirty maps. These maps are distinguished by their elaborate cartouche and images. As with many of his works, Moll used these maps in order to publicize and support British policy and its regional rights around the world: he called the Atlantic Ocean the "Sea of the British Empire." On a plaque in the lower area the text appears: “To is most sacred majesty George, by the Grace of God king of Great Britain France & Ireland defender of the faith.”
It is, therefore, a table of extraordinary quality and finish, which can be used as a games table, as a coffee table or as a side table for any corner.
The prestigious Parisian brand Maison Jansen is one of the great interior design firms. It was founded by Jean-Henri Jansen in 1880, a Dutchman living in Paris, and soon established itself in a location a few meters from the Bastille. He stood out especially for his restoration and his work in cabinetmaking, with the best craftsmen of his time. from its beginnings, its intention was to combine traditional furniture with influences from new trends, including the Anglo-Japanese style, Chinoiseries, the Arts and Crafts movement and the Turkish style. It grew, opening workshops and stores all over the world, and decorated the residences of personalities such as the Kennedys, the Dukes of Windsor and Coco Chanel.
