With our absolute highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in offering this exceptional pair of antique arm chairs. We believe these chairs were produced either at the end of the 19th century or early into the 20th century by a master furniture designer with remarkable carving abilities. These chairs are two of the most refined examples which we have been able to secure in a considerable amount of time and we could not be any prouder to offer them for the consideration of collectors across the country. The chairs are constructed in the Federal manner with a shield-back form that has been prevalent in American homes since the 18th century. The lower central elements of each chair back feature fan carvings which radiate five curved back slats that are carved with acanthus leaf and pineapple motifs.
The chair frames are expertly molded with arched serpentine crests, rosette carved rolled arms, and tapered legs that are molded on the front and outward faces. Each chair is sturdy and in excellent condition with tightly secured joints that are free from any concerns. Both chairs were expertly restored throughout the years with museum quality restorations discretely worked into various places throughout the chair frames. The seats are both expertly upholstered over serpentine seat rails with fine leather and brass tacks that are applied in the traditional of Federal period drapery swags. There are only minimal points of distress with minor splits on one seat which are hardly worth noting and are of no consequence. A sturdy "H" shaped stretcher has ensured that the chairs have remained in good order. These chairs measure 24 1/2" wide measured arm to arm x18 1/2" deep at the seat x 38" tall overall. The arms are 26 1/2" tall off the floor and the seat heights are both 18" tall.
