This is inspired by French designs of the early 18th century. The opulent marquetry is in the manner of A. C. Boulle, (1642-1732), the celebrated ebeniste who specialised in elaborate marquetry using metal and shell which became so fashionable in the Louis XIV period and again in the latter half of the 19th century.
