This exceptional antique Persian Feraghan, woven circa 1880, is a remarkably fine example of the classic all-over Herati design that established Feraghan as one of the most esteemed weaving centers of 19th-century Persia. Distinguished by its extraordinary fineness, elegant proportions, and refined drawing, this rug possesses the sophistication and craftsmanship sought by collectors of early Persian carpets.
The ivory field is covered with an exceptionally intricate lattice of Herati motifs, featuring stylized rosettes, angular leaves, and delicate floral elements repeated with remarkable precision. The absence of a central medallion creates a seamless, balanced composition, allowing the intricate pattern to flow gracefully across the entire field—one of the defining characteristics of the finest early Feraghan rugs.
Surrounding the field is a beautifully proportioned ivory main border decorated with stylized floral rosettes and geometric vinery, framed by multiple finely executed guard borders that enhance the elegance of the composition without overwhelming the delicate field design.
The palette is refined and harmonious, consisting of ivory, soft coral red, terracotta, olive green, camel, muted gold, and deep indigo, all derived from high-quality natural vegetable dyes. A particularly desirable feature is the natural abrash visible toward one end of the rug, where subtle variations in the ivory field create a beautiful transition of tone. This natural color variation, resulting from hand-dyed wool, is considered a hallmark of authenticity and adds considerable character and charm to the piece.
The rug is woven with an exceptionally fine knot count using lustrous, high-grade wool, producing crisp drawing and remarkable clarity throughout. It remains in good original condition, retaining excellent definition, healthy pile, and beautifully preserved colors that have mellowed gracefully over nearly a century and a half.
