Description of the item:
a wonderful sculpture depicting the face of a young woman, entirely handmade and modeled by the artist in glazed majolica hard ceramic, finished with metallic lustres, with a wooden base and metal plaque bearing the artist's name and the place of production of the sculpture, "d. Matteucci, faenza." in our opinion, the bust is truly beautiful, with a truly rare sensuality. The most characteristic element that makes us consider it a slightly futuristic work is the hair, which is extremely stylized and soft in its lines, leaving us wondering whether it is hair or a scarf covering the head, blending in with the woman's hair.
useful information for evaluating the item:
from an internet search, we find that domenico matteucci's ceramics, large plaques depicting madonnas with child, or various figures in relief, faces and busts of women or girls, sculptures of various kinds, all glazed in majolica and vitrified, are offered for sale or auction at a minimum of €200-300 up to over €1,000 on average.
information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
domenico matteucci was born in faenza in 1914. A sculptor and ceramist, he studied at the art school in faenza and, after completing his studies at the academy of fine arts in bologna, where he was a pupil of giovanni romagnoli, he frequented emilio casadio's ceramics workshop in via maioliche in faenza, which soon became a meeting place for young artists. In the second half of the 1930s, he worked as a sculptor with mario morelli's ceramics studio in faenza, creating several works decorated with vibrant colors on thick crystalline backgrounds, sometimes enriched with the application of metallic lustres. He later worked at the "casadio" workshops. In the early 1940s, he moved to milan, where he worked with giuseppe angelo's ceramics studio in sesto san giovanni. Shortly after the end of world war ii, he opened a kiln, inviting mario morelli and pietro melandri to collaborate with him. From the mid-1950s onwards, the ceramist wanda berasi, known as muky, worked in his workshop. Domenico matteucci died in his hometown in 1991.
