Description of the object:
Lamp base in majolica stoneware, extremely hard ceramic, entirely hand-shaped on a potter's wheel and glazed with porous, thick, compact, extremely hard glazes, with a decorative effect in various shades of green, signed by the artist "Raul Lachenal" in full under the base. The vase can be dated to the first half of the 20th century, between 1910 and 1930. The artistic quality of the object is beyond question. Note how the surface, entirely hand-shaped, is a perfect oval and the stoneware is of the highest quality, masterfully glazed in various shades of green with a clear layering of successive glazes that make the glaze extremely compact and thick, typical of Lachenal's work.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
From our internet research, we found that Raul Lachenal has numerous auction results, and the four highest we found range from approximately €5,200 to €10,900, plus auction fees of 25-30%. We also found many small vases, similar in size to our lamp base and with colors very similar to ours, with auction results ranging from €1,500 to €2,000-3,000. This is just to give you an idea of the value of Raul Lachenal's stoneware works.
Information about artist and/or manufacturer:
Raoul Lachenal (1885–1956) was a French ceramist. The son of Edmond Lachenal, Raoul Lachenal worked in his father's studio until 1911, when he opened a new workshop in Boulogne-sur-Seine. While some of Raoul Lachenal's Art Nouveau ceramics resemble his father's pieces, he also produced distinctive stoneware ceramics that can stand comparison with the works of master glaziers such as Ernest Chaplet and Albert Dammouse. [1] At his best, Lachenal can rightly be compared to these titans of the French artistic ceramics renaissance. Lachenal first exhibited his Art Nouveau stoneware at the Paris Salons in 1904. Period photographs show pieces with organic shapes, ring handles, and incised decorations similar to the works of Edmond Lachenal from around 1900. Since father and son shared a studio, the question of authorship is uncertain on several levels, particularly with regard to direct influence and possible collaboration. Nevertheless, the son's stoneware is distinguished by its sophisticated use of conventional motifs and the layering of high-temperature glazes.
