“The Bronco buster” or The Broncho Tamer is the first bronze sculpture made by American artist Frederic Remington.
It was in 1895. It represents the breaking of a wild horse, symbolic of the conquering and heroic spirit that prevailed in the United States during the conquest of the West.
This work represents a very fiery and very muscular wild horse. We are shown its wild character by making it rear up. He wears a big western saddle because a cowboy tries to tame him and grabs onto his mane.
Remington's sculpture was inspired by the work of the Russian sculptor Lanceray, whom he discovered during an exhibition of his in Philadelphia in 18761. The Russian's bronze sculptures are "extremely detailed"1 . In 1892, he undertook a trip to the Russian Empire to admire the works of Lanceray. Three years later, he modeled “Bronco buster”, his first and also most famous sculpture.
It has since been published in 300 copies, one of which has been kept at the White House since the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt.
