Description of the item:
oil painting on thick solid wood panel, i believe it is mahogany, depicting a seascape with mountains, lake or sea, houses in the distance and sailboats, signed in red at the bottom right by the artist "a. Hulk," which stands for abraham i hulk (senior). The painting can be dated to the late 19th century, between 1860 and 1880. The signature has been slightly erased by the various cleanings that the painting has undergone over time, but it is still clearly visible. A painting of great quality, entirely executed with a brush by a painter of remarkable artistic talent. The depth of the landscape is superb, the boats and mountains in the distance are beautiful, and the cloud-filled sky is majestic.
useful information for evaluating the item:
a web search shows that abraham i hulk svanta has numerous auction results, with the eight highest results we found ranging from approximately €39,000 to approximately €58,000, plus auction fees of 25-30%. For paintings of the same size as ours, the results range from a minimum of €2,000 to €5,000-6,000, plus auction fees. This is to give an idea of the value of the paintings created by this artist.
information regarding the authenticity of the painting:
the painting was examined under a wood's lamp (see photo). This analysis revealed that there are no retouches or restorations to missing parts and that the signature is contemporary with the painting because it is under the patina. If it had been added later, it would be white and shiny or purplish, as are the retouches, which is not the case. In addition, the painting has been professionally cleaned by us, and the pigment's behavior when dabbed with acetone was that of a pigment from the 1800s, which is very resistant to the action of solvents. Finally, the solid wood panel on which it is painted is thick, dark, and very old, and there are some wax seals on the back, which means that the painting belonged to some important collection. There is also a small remnant of a scroll in the lower right corner, yellowed and dirty, all of which greatly increases the guarantee of the work's authenticity. In our opinion, this is a 100% original work.
