In 19th century … Read more A set of five Japanese shallow trays hand-woven in an open-work hexagonal pattern and weathered with time. In 19th century Japan, these wide, flat bottom bamboo trays were woven as platforms for silk harvesting. The trays were filled with mulberry leaves and then sprinkled with silkworm eggs. When the eggs hatched, silkworms would spend their entire lives eating the leaves until they created cocoons of silk.
