Aquamaniles are water vessels often used for hand washing in ritual or ceremonial contexts. Their use is widespread in several cultures such as the Bamoun and Tikkar in Cameroon, but also in the Kingdom of Benin, located in present-day Nigeria.
Each element of the aquamanile is laden with symbolism, reflecting the values and beliefs of Bamoun society. The rooster, human and animal figures, and decorative motifs all contribute to a rich and multidimensional interpretation of the work.
This bronze aquamanile from the Bamoun kingdom is an exceptional example of the art and technique of this civilization. It combines remarkable technical mastery with symbolic and narrative richness, offering a profound insight into the cultural values and ritual practices of this people. The complexity of the composition and the level of detail testify to the importance of bronze art in Bamoun culture and the exceptional skill of its craftsmen.
An exceptional piece highly prized by collectors and designers. Impressive in size, 108 cm and weighing 20 kg.
Presumed age: mid-20th century
