"Waterfall in forest"
Lovely forest landscape animated by a waterfall gushing between two rocks, a theme regularly painted by Gustave COURBET and his studio.
The painting, made around 1870, signed G.COURBET, presents very beautiful lighting effects obtained using the knife (waterfall, foliage, etc.), a technique so dear to COURBET of whom he was an undisputed master.
In the 1870s, COURBET went into exile in Switzerland where he surrounded himself with several talented collaborators to assist him and honor his numerous commissions; among all the paintings from this studio produced at this time, it is very complicated to determine the exact intervention of COURBET and the true authors of each painting.
Given the undeniable quality of this work, the subject and the very beautiful mastery of the knife, with a well-stretched and smooth material, we logically think that this work comes from COURBET's close entourage, probably from his workshop of collaborators.
Last picture showed 2 similar examples painted by Gustave COURBET in the catalogue raisonne of his artworks.
Oil on canvas
62 x 78 cms (sold without frame)
Signed in red "G.COURBET" lower right
IMPORTANT: The signature was later redone a little roughly in a lighter red color, I guarantee that the original signature was indeed "G.COURBET" in a darker red color and finer calligraphy (in accordance with the signatures used by COURBET and his collaborators), we can also guess this original signature in places, in particular by examining the upper end of the loop of the G (see close-up photo - original dark red signature surrounded in black) as well as on the loops of the letters C and B
Very beautiful presentation, clean work on its original canvas, to report old restorations
Photos taken only in sunlight
Among the collaborators constituting COURBET's entourage, let us cite for example Cherubino PATA, Marcel ORDINAIRE, Ernest BIGOT, Louis-Augustin AUGUIN or Hippolyte PRADELLES.
Paintings sold in the auctions houses attributed to Gustave COURBET's collaborators, announced "Courbet and workshop" or "Courbet and collaboration" are negotiated between 5,000 and 30,000 euros depending on the nature of the subjects.
A work created by Gustave COURBET is obviously negotiated 10 to 20 times more expensive, not to mention the masterpieces of course !
