Using only simple tools, the artisan beckoned the guardian out from the stone, manipulating the unyielding material with masterful precision. Intricately carved with a gleeful expression, this mythical fu lion dog was likely a decorative architectural component, perhaps commissioned by a wealthy landowner to adorn his Qing-dynasty home as a protector. Gently textured with fantastic character, areas of the stone show the oxidation and smoothness that come with centuries of time and touch.
