a provincial artist that worked both in watercolour and oils. Active throughout the early and middle reign of queen victoria. A painter of landscapes, seascapes and portraits. A journeyman artist that produced work from cornwall to scotland and from the mainland continent. A body of work exists in cornwall and the west country of england with examples of his early portraiture held in the helston folk museum, cornwall.
this original watercolour painting depicts the scene looking down on looe harbour, the mouth of the looe estuary, in south east cornwall. The position of the sun, visible through light cloud cover suggests it is early on a summer’s morning. The sun is reflected on the water of the sea. The sky and sea are of a pale blue, both shimmering gently in the delicate light. In the foreground there is a working vessel with two sails called a lugger, coloured ochre in the sunlight. It is heading out to sea. There are two other luggers to the left and right. Along the harbour wall are the houses and church of the small community of looe. In medieval times there were two towns on opposite banks of the river looe. East looe includes the fishing harbour and the sandiest beach. West looe is quieter, but also has shops, restaurants and hotels. The two towns are now one, joined by a bridge across the looe river. This view is looking east, across the area formerly known as east looe. Out at sea the waters are tranquil and the whole scene exudes an aura of peace and calm contentment.
