Phister wall lamp by hans due for fog & mørup, denmark, 1977
designed by hans due in the 1970s and produced by fog & mørup, the phister wall lamp is a striking example of danish modern lighting design. Introduced in 1977, the lamp features a distinctly graphic and geometric form — a simple cylinder with both ends cut at opposing 45-degree angles.
the phister is constructed in two parts:
the upper section, attached to the wall, houses the socket and features a cylindrical switch that protrudes decoratively from the top. Positioned for easy access, it was designed so that users — particularly when using the lamp as a bedside light — would not need to fumble for an inline switch.
the lower section acts as the adjustable shade, shielding the bulb and able to swivel 360 degrees, allowing the light to be directed sideways or away as desired.
a gap between the two components clearly defines them as separate pieces rather than a single tube; when illuminated, this space glows as a luminous ring, enhancing the lamp’s sculptural and functional appeal.
although due originally intended the phister to be made of metal, fog & mørup envisioned it instead as a youthful pop design, produced in coloured abs plastic to broaden its commercial appeal. The result was a line of playful yet sophisticated lamps available in yellow ochre, light grey, red, chocolate brown, and dark green, with either black or white press switches.
the outer shade rotates freely around the fixed inner housing, enabling full directional control of the light. Prefabricated slots in the base allow the lamp to be wall-mounted or used freestanding on a table or bedside. The phister first appeared in the fog & mørup catalogue of 1977.
hans due was an accomplished danish designer, recognized with several awards, including a 1974 prize for his formel lighting series for fog & mørup. His best-known work remains the optima series, comprising pendant, wall, table, and floor lamps in various sizes.
