Painting on glass was introduced into India in the 18th century by itinerant Chinese artists and was generally a middle class art form. Glass paintings done for the rulers were of aristocrats and their mistresses. Pictures for the middle class were of deities. There are five paintings available in the same size frames.
The first painting is of a topless concubine of a maharajah heavily laden with jewelry, sitting in an upholstered chair holding a glass decanter against the background of a palace window with draperies. The gilded frame is original.
The second painting is of a maharajah and his wife or concubine in a palace setting with him sitting in a chair with a background of draperies. Also in the original gilded frame.
The third painting is of a Maharajah in full dress, wielding his sword while riding his stallion. He is set within an oval that is surrounded by silver dots. The gilded frame is original.
The fourth painting is of a Maharajah in full dress attire sitting on his chaise lounge under which is a foot stool, with a group of four attendants helping him with his hookah. The old frame is a faded red color.
The last painting is of a Maharajah with beard and mustache wearing a red and gold striped turban, jewelry, beads and a sash across his chest. The faded red painted frame is original.
These paintings can be bought individually for $1,700 each.
